While the majority of NFL teams have their QB1 set in stone, there are always a few teams where the position is up for grabs. Not everyone is fortunate enough to have a Brady, Ryan, Newton, Luck, Winston, Prescott on their roster. Often a QB spot that is still unfilled is the hall-mark of a team in trouble, but one of the teams on our list was a play-off winner last year. Let’s look at the three biggest QB contests heading into pre-season 2017 and the implications in the NFL Pro Picks Scene.
1. Jets: McCown vs Hackenberg vs Petty
After the Fitz-Magic turned out to be nothing more than a cheap trick, the Jets are what might generously be described as a ‘work in progress’ going into the 2017 season. Josh McCown is getting paid a hefty $6 million for the season, which makes him favorite to start. However, while Bryce Petty is pretty much a confirmed third-stringer, Jets fans may well ask about the upside of playing a 37-year-old vet in place of second-year prospect Hackenberg. If the Jets really are going to tank their way to the first overall pick next year, shouldn’t they at least take a look at what they’ve got in the mean-time?
2. Browns: Kizer vs Kessler vs Osweiler
Probably the most interesting QB battle will take place in Cleveland. With an impressive draft behind them, the Browns are not going into the new season as down-beat as usual. In fact there is a pretty lively battle for the quarterback position to be ironed out. It’s still early, but DeShone Kizer has impressed since his arrival from the Irish. 24-year-old Cody Kessler is the presumed starter right now, and the jury is still out on him since he was hit-and-miss during his 2016 rookie year. Osweiler, on the other hand, is a physical specimen who flashed at times for the Broncos, and maybe Hue Jackson will feel like he can turn this promising prospect into the real deal. This is one QB battle liable to come down to the wire.
3. Texans: Savage vs Weeden vs Watson
Having foisted the afore-mentioned Brock onto the Browns, the QB1 spot is Tom Savage’s to lose at this stage. However, the 27-year-old fourth round draft pick has hardly set the league afire since joining the Texans. Two starts in 3 years is hardly the stuff of champions, and Savage didn’t do much to advance his case in either of those starts. Although he has suffered bad luck from injuries, he has found himself behind such luminaries as Osweiler, Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallet in the pecking order. While Old Man Weeden will not pose a threat to the starting job, the Texans expended a lot to move up to get Deshaun Watson in the draft. Two first-round picks, 12th overall pick in 2017 and first round pick in 2018 to be precise. If Savage has any kind of a sluggish start, expect the natives to start getting extremely restless in Texas.
The Implications in the NFL Pro Picks Scene
No doubt injuries and form issues will lead to more quarterback controversies and changes in the new season. I mean, who saw Prescott v Romo coming last year? In the mean-time these three QB competitions will require some careful attention during pre-season.
